With the present volume, the journal formerly published under the title Arte de América Latina / Sztuka Ameryki Południowej is being relaunched as Anuario de Arte Latinoamericano. This renaming follows deliberations within the editorial board and reflects a strategic reorientation that foregrounds both the new publication’s annual format and its affiliation with the Spanish-language scholarly sphere.
The inaugural double issue of Anuario de Arte Latinoamericano (2025/2026), entitled “Brazil” and published exceptionally in English and Portuguese, is devoted to twentieth- and twenty-first-century Brazilian art and culture, approached through transnational, feminist, transgender, and decolonial frameworks. The contributions assembled here collectively interrogate and destabilize the center–periphery paradigm, proposing instead a non-hierarchical understanding of the historically entangled relations between Brazilian and Euro-American cultural formations. Particular emphasis is placed on the ways in which Brazilian art historians and critics have critically engaged with, appropriated, and deconstructed the canon of Eurocentric art history. At the same time, the volume foregrounds transatlantic artistic exchanges between Brazil and East-Central Europe, mobilizing a transnational lens to reassess reductive accounts of modern artists and migrant trajectories in the first half of the twentieth century.
